Tech Arts
At Melville Intermediate School, students have the unique opportunity to participate in technology and specialist classes in a rotation throughout the year. Here they design, create, problem solves and learn specific practical skills.
Melville Intermediate offers six Technology specialist subjects each year. Students work to solve real-life problems, following the technological processes. The following subjects make up our technology specialists programme:
Students learn to create and differentiate between series and parallel circuits. They learn to draw diagrams with component symbols. Students learn to use a variety of tools such as multimeters, wire cutters, batteries, motors and magnets appropriately. In addition, they will develop and debug simple programs that use inputs, outputs and sequences and iterations.
Students will acquire the knowledge and practical skills to prepare simple nutritious meals through the process of selecting, preparing and serving food. In Year 7 the focus is on developing and understanding safe food practices and applying this knowledge while working in the Foods Room. In Year 8 the focus is on building a knowledge of Food Hygiene and then using the knowledge and understanding to produce safe, hygienic food.
Students will build a foundation of woodworking skills with an emphasis on safe working practices and the correct use of equipment. They will understand basic plans, and develop skills in assembling and fixing materials.
Students will learn basic music notation and theory. They will be introduced to playing the ukulele, keyboard, guitar and drumming. These music classes give students a taste of a variety of instruments and a chance to write, create and record their own music on an iPad with the expert support of our Music teacher.
Students participate in lessons to explore a range of visual art types and techniques including sketching and blending, painting, observational sketching and pottery. They will learn to reflect and then refine their ideas in order to solve problems and create objects and images
The main focus of these lessons is on the Material World (chemistry) and the Physical World (physics). These lessons will ensure students appreciate that science is a way of explaining the world and that scientific knowledge changes over time. A range of scientific concepts is taught in a supportive environment with plenty of practical, hands-on learning. Students will learn to ask questions, find evidence, and develop simple explanations to grow science knowledge.
